about

Our next EP ‘Roam In Silence’ was a much, MUCH more solid release. I got my head around the whole ‘acoustic’ thing by now and feel I did better justice to Scott’s songs. Also, I think the EP had a stronger selection of songs! It was actually hard to pick the ‘best of’ from this album, we could have included them all.

The first track ‘Fantasia’ was the lead single and if Bandcamp downloads are anything to go by, Shock Octopus’ most popular song by a fair margin. Although professional reviews of the EP were quite icy, our friends and family – not to mention community benefit gigs which we played a lot of – generally responded much better to the softer sound. My work colleagues were very relieved, that’s for sure!

Fantasia came about from my friend Veronique, who was showing me her poetry collection, and this piece leapt out at me instantly and the melody formulated in my head as I read it. So, I rushed home and the song was born in a matter of days. Veronique sang backup vocals during the recording – it was the first time that she had had her vocal recorded and the whole experience was incredibly fun for all. The song itself screams ‘piano ballad’ and it is heavily inspired by an album from ‘Feist’ that a friend of mine was playing at the time. The contrasting moody opening chords were inspired by ‘Dead can Dance.’

lyrics

Fly in the water
Swim in the sky
Live in your death
Laugh in your cry

Enter the exit
Come as you go
Drown in the air
Forget what you know

To reach nirvana
You had to fall
So far below
Wander in circles
Through endless strange roads
To find your way back home

Hate your lover
Hold onto the fall
Join your dividers
Your nothing is your all

Enter the exit come as you go
Drown in the air
Forget what you know

To reach nirvana
You had to fall
So far below
Wander in circles
Through endless strange roads
To find your way back home
