Frustrated Crustacean

from A Decade Into Darkness by Shock Octopus

about

Well they say every good band needs its own private George Harrison. David Blair contributed one track for our self-titled EP, and later long player ‘A Crisis!’ But to call this track a ‘keeper’ is an understatement.

Dave was very inspired by the modern prog-rock sound (especially early Radiohead and Porcupine Tree). So it is tempting, from the title and the progressive nature of the track itself to label this song as the ‘Paranoid Android’ of Shock Octopus. But I think that this is only scratching the surface. There is a cabaret, vaudeville, creepy circus feel to the track before the choruses literally and figuratively ‘break down.’ The extended outro was a blast of controlled chaos, and combined with a knowing sense of theatrics, ‘Frustrated Crustacran’ was the centrepiece of our sets and tore the house down live.

I know that Dave was sometimes a little unsure of the unfamiliar territory that I was taking this band into. This is why this track is a testament to him, because not only did he stick it out, he also wrote something that took this this vision to a top tier of song writing magic, leaving me speechless and even a little envious.

lyrics

There's a creeping thought
That I held and fought
But it's came to naught
In a dark abyss

With a single word
And a minor third
Could a song be heard
In a world like this?

But I've held the fire
I've torched the infidels
But I never realised something was amiss

Breakdown
Turn back
If you want to save the world
What's that?
Love me
If you want to save the world and your own face
Please don't be cruel
It was only a rule
It wasn't meant to fuel my rage

But I've come too far now
These forces are driving me over
What is there to say
I've changed I've changed I've changed
Breakdown
Turn back
If you want to save the world
What's that?
Love me
If you want to save the world and your own face.
